Edition #280 Brand Balance Sheets, 5/8

One big thing As we transition to the new normal, those brands that are spending, are starting to invest in marketing assets. Assets like app installs, newsletter subscribers, upper-funnel audience, training, webinar attendance. “The roughly $40 billion app-install market was “likely the most material contributor this quarter” to social media ad spend, according to Morgan Stanley analysts.” And why not, with attention up and cost per clicks down, it's a perfect storm. By my calculations,… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 4/24

It’s Friday, you did it, again 🙂 One big thing This week felt like the real start to the second quarter and we’re seeing it in this week’s stories. With earnings season in, Snap usage rising, Google making hiring freezes, the waters are still choppy. But business must go on, NBCU announced a more integrated ad product with their own ecommerce check out. And Horizon media took a deep dive into how our use of emojis has changed in… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 3/6

A quick ask, Gustaf on his team is looking for marketers to provide feedback on a new initiative. If you would like to be involved, in exchange for a treat on us, let me know. Just asking for 30 minutes of your time – over a screen share. One big thing Last week I wondered – when or IF we would mention the Corona Virus in the newsletter. This is the week I guess and we have a couple… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 1/17

One big thing The story this week was Google committing to a roadmap to remove third-party cookies within 2 years. This has been an internal battle for them, Google Adsense vs DoubleClick vs Chrome. Google Adsense is the traditional advertising teams’ at Google, DoubleClick is the more brand solutions and Chrome – obviously their browser. The ads teams want/need the third party cookies but Chrome doesn’t want to lose market share by not keeping up… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 1/9

I took a clinical approach to CES and was in/out for a few key meetings. With the short duration, I didn’t get to wander the gadgets unfortunately but enjoyed the time in media. It’s my first time, the event is pretty close-knit, so you naturally bump into a bunch of people. Which I like. So if you haven’t been considering it. Given CES was on, there are a few stories, it is worth getting a coffee and catching the most… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 10/18

One big thing This week I caught the Carat webinar focused on 2020 and Attention. With the election and Olympics coming up it’ll be a big year, a hard one to A couple of points which To cut through, you need to be relevant and to be relevant you need good content. One TIL was that for political advertisers, they have to be careful with targeting – because the right message to the wrong audience, can actually drive donations… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 10/4

Back in the hot seat, it’s been a full on couple of weeks but read on. For those who follow Nudge, we have soft-launched a ‘for all content marketers’ solution. You can check it out here. It’s pretty neat. And that seems a fitting thing to announce on the 250th edition. Native is now the norm, content is now the norm. Thank you all for reading! The comments, intros, submissions are what really makes it. ???… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 8/23

One big thing I’ve been thinking about Barbell strategy this week. When people invest short term and long term. Or a big consumer media company partners with a tiny company. Or the mix between high and low risk assets. It seems in a digital world, the middle is being squeezed out. If it’s sizable, it becomes a portfolio item in a bigger company. Otherwise its small and niche. As it relates to readers, it seems… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 8/16

For August and September I’m holding “office hours” on Fridays. Simply sign up for a 20 minute slot to have a chat with me about trends, best practices, what we are seeing in the market and even do some trouble shooting. One big thing What does the ViacomCBS deal mean for native & content? You may recall that Viacom’s Advanced Marketing Services (AMS) was expected to double this year. And that… Continue reading
