Edition #279 Weird Earnings, 5/1

One big thing What the stock market got wrong this week. Alphabet, Google, Facebook and Twitter were all up after earnings after most analysts expected a bigger hit to revenue. Yet for most firms, the virus was only an impediment for a fraction of the quarter. Advertisers won't have cut straight away – behavior would be distributed through that timeframe. What should be in focus, is how they are addressing Q2. And that speaks to the uncertainty, see below. Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 3/13

We're hearing more people are WFH, if you've got time for a 30 minute coffee over screen share, Gustaf would still love to chat. He is looking for marketers to provide feedback on a new initiative. If you would like to be involved, in exchange for a treat on us, let me know. Much appreciated. ? A lot of info is flying around about Covid, Noah put together a simple verified list about it in an… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 1/9

I took a clinical approach to CES and was in/out for a few key meetings. With the short duration, I didn’t get to wander the gadgets unfortunately but enjoyed the time in media. It’s my first time, the event is pretty close-knit, so you naturally bump into a bunch of people. Which I like. So if you haven’t been considering it. Given CES was on, there are a few stories, it is worth getting a coffee and catching the most… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 11/1

Colin here. I’m filling in for Ben as he prepares for child number two. One big thing There’s starting to be a flood of brand interest onto TikTok. It is, put simply, one of the most interesting and creative spaces on the Internet right now. Not surprisingly, the platform is experimenting and is in the nascent stages of building out its ad and sponsorship products. Right now, it’s basically just an opening screen that a… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 8/23

One big thing I’ve been thinking about Barbell strategy this week. When people invest short term and long term. Or a big consumer media company partners with a tiny company. Or the mix between high and low risk assets. It seems in a digital world, the middle is being squeezed out. If it’s sizable, it becomes a portfolio item in a bigger company. Otherwise its small and niche. As it relates to readers, it seems… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 7/12

One big thing The concept of ‘creator-first’ strategies was mentioned in the new Twitter ArtHouse announcement. And it’s not the first time I’ve heard of this. Rather than focusing on the outlet, focus on the talent behind the content. With influencers, that is obvious and direct. For most other content brands create, it’s not. Is there a future where branded content creators are as in demand as hot TV directors? I’d say so. But not… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 10/26

One big thing It’s been earnings week, so a lot of noise around Amazon vs Google, Snap, Twitter. Oath being flat. The narrative has shifted ever so slightly, from taking tv budget, to budget from each other. Especially on Amazon vs Google. Data and privacy has put everyone under the limelight. The real question is, of the bunch,… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 9/21

One big thing I saw another post from DigiDay, marketers upset at lack of transparency. It’s worth calling out – transparency is an option, if you want it, go get a partner that will deliver it. Dmexco thoughts Dmexco was a bit sweet and sour. That is, I love catching up with peers and meeting new folks in the industry. But it’s largely just one side of the industry so feels tone deaf. There isn’t… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 8/3

One big thing For the past few years growing digital attention has been taken for granted, that’s starting to change. This week Facebook announced they are launching activity timers to help users manage how much time they are spending in FB + Instagram. Smart. Apple is doing the same on your phone. If you were to stop thinking about CPMs and think about Cost Per Second. With a defined amount of digital attention each… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 5/4

Given I missed a couple of weeks, this is a bigger edition, I’ve worked to make it as impactful as possible. This week in conversations, the balance between technology & service has come up a bit, our industry is often the first disrupted by technology – and everyone is feeling it. This is the new world, how can technology companies work with their service partners more effectively? And vice versa. It’s a partnership eco-system, neither can exist without the… Continue reading
