This Week in Native Ads 1/24

After a couple of meatier weeks this is a lighter edition – but do spend it checking out the campaigns of the week, both excellent. Notable stories this week Revcontent introduces native video marketplace. Employees sharing TikToks behind the scenes. Facebook has barred an Israeli firm that claims it can “subconsciously influence” people, because it is allegedly using fake accounts on social media platforms. Instagram… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 1/17

One big thing The story this week was Google committing to a roadmap to remove third-party cookies within 2 years. This has been an internal battle for them, Google Adsense vs DoubleClick vs Chrome. Google Adsense is the traditional advertising teams’ at Google, DoubleClick is the more brand solutions and Chrome – obviously their browser. The ads teams want/need the third party cookies but Chrome doesn’t want to lose market share by not keeping up… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 1/9

I took a clinical approach to CES and was in/out for a few key meetings. With the short duration, I didn’t get to wander the gadgets unfortunately but enjoyed the time in media. It’s my first time, the event is pretty close-knit, so you naturally bump into a bunch of people. Which I like. So if you haven’t been considering it. Given CES was on, there are a few stories, it is worth getting a coffee and catching the most… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 12/13

One big thing Enjoyed Ciaran O’Kanes 20 things for 2020, in particular, his comments on ITP. You may recall ITP is Apple’s tracking protection technology which has significantly impacted mobile ad revenue. “Safari has neutered the third-party cookie. Firefox has firebombed it. And Chrome is likely to gut it by year-end; 2020.” His view is that this is the biggest opportunity, to better monetize based on ITP. And I like that, I like the spirit… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 12/6

Next week I’m hosting some drinks for smart folks in the sports media industry. LMK if you’d like to join us. Informal, small group. I shared my top books of 2019, what were yours? One big thing The Columbia Journalism school has been undertaking a multi-year study on the relationship between large-scale technology companies and journalism. In their latest update, they summarize the present state of affairs. A couple of takeaways: How publishers use the… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 9/13

One big thing This week we saw fresh investment in Group Nine and Atlas Obscura, both showing promise that strategic partners see in the space. The common thread between the two companies is a good mix of uncorrelated revenue. Atlas Obscura has branded content, the Airbnb investment will rapidly grow ‘affiliate-like’ revenue and book deals. Group Nine has tv/content deals with The Dodo, Facebook revenue with NowThis and then affiliate with Thrillist. As well as its first book deal with… Continue reading

The measurement problem facing modern marketers

It is 2021, and measurement is more of a moving target than ever. The industry, platforms, and content are all in flux. Lets take a look at recent data points we’ve seen: – 87% of ad execs say they hold back spending on media and platforms due to poor measurement. – MediaPost – Half of the marketers in this survey discard at least half of their data. – eMarketer – Centralizing marketing data remains a top… Continue reading
