An overview of terms often used in branded content. See also Native Advertising Glossary.

Advertorial, similar to paid content, describes content that has been paid for by a brand. 

Branded content, content that is made for the express purpose of promoting a brand. If you took the brand out, the content couldn’t exist.

Custom content, describes content that has been paid for by a brand and created in collaboration with them. 

Disclosure, the label or notification that informs a reader that this content has been paid for and is promotional. 

Distribution, describes how the content is distributed to readers. Paid distribution often refers to paid advertising.

Paid content, describes content that has been paid for by a brand. 

Partnership content, similar to custom content, describes content that has been paid for by a brand and created in collaboration with them. 

Sponsored content, similar to paid content, describes content that has been paid for by a brand. Content may or may not be directly related to the brand.

Syndicated content, content that has been distributed for additional reach. Not necessarily custom made with that publication but usually branded content.
