Anatomy of bots: how we saved a major tech company from paying seven figures for fraudulent traffic

We hear a lot about bot fraud and fake traffic. This Week in Native Ads 11/1

Colin here. I’m filling in for Ben as he prepares for child number two. One big thing There’s starting to be a flood of brand interest onto TikTok. It is, put simply, one of the most interesting and creative spaces on the Internet right now. Not surprisingly, the platform is experimenting and is in the nascent stages of building out its ad and sponsorship products. Right now, it’s basically just an opening screen that a… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 10/18

One big thing This week I caught the Carat webinar focused on 2020 and Attention. With the election and Olympics coming up it’ll be a big year, a hard one to A couple of points which To cut through, you need to be relevant and to be relevant you need good content. One TIL was that for political advertisers, they have to be careful with targeting – because the right message to the wrong audience, can actually drive donations… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 8/9

One big thing London folks, please do come along to our event later this month. As a kiwi in New York the biggest change between how content is seen here vs internationally, is the practicality. In other markets people are a lot more practical, I do this to get X or Y. Here the value chains are bigger. So they’re trying to help move the needle on that component. It’s good and bad. For emerging… Continue reading

Why context in premium environments dominate how we respond to content

Working at Nudge, I get to look behind the advertising industry’s ‘curtain’ on a daily basis. Marketers who know me often ask ‘what’s the one thing I should do more of?’. I always tell them the same thing – focus on improving the quality of your content campaigns. Now, not wanting to risk losing your interest this early into the article (due to what can be seen as an obfuscating statement), what I mean by quality is:  … Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 5/31

One big thing A by-product of consolidation, is the reduction in operations, both companies don’t need a finance team for example. But these teams are the lifeblood that keep organizations running, they hold the organizational memory and market knowledge. The counter, is the rise in technology at scale to power and enhance processes. Consolidation is an opportunity to rejuvenate and refocus on what truly is most impactful. As every other chat seems to be about the consolidation of the… Continue reading

Killing Wasted Spend: how to staunch the bleeding of digital dollars and reignite growth

Imagine, for a moment, an industry outside of digital advertising where waste was as commonplace.   You turn on CNBC in the morning to watch in horror that the aluminum market managed to misplace 7 billion dollars worth of the commodity. Vanished without a trace. Or that 800 million bushels of soybeans disappeared overnight.   The Association for National Advertisers reports that only a quarter of all digital ads reach real people, and the… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 8/3

One big thing For the past few years growing digital attention has been taken for granted, that’s starting to change. This week Facebook announced they are launching activity timers to help users manage how much time they are spending in FB + Instagram. Smart. Apple is doing the same on your phone. If you were to stop thinking about CPMs and think about Cost Per Second. With a defined amount of digital attention each… Continue reading

If you’re using Time on Page, to evaluate content you’re doing it wrong

Time on Page, measures when you arrive on a page and when you click off, the difference between those two. But what happens is that with a bounce rate of 30-40%, or even higher on amplified content (70-80%) that calculation is done off a small percentage of the visitors to the content. i.e. take this example, we amplified our post The Best Native Ads of 2015 with Yahoo Gemini. The top url, is our piece of content,… Continue reading
