An archive of our newsletter. This Week in Native Ads was a curated weekly newsletter to help make you smarter on all things native, branded content and the shifts in marketing. It evolved to just the Nudge Newsletter as the native ad industry grew.

This Week in Native Ads 7/26

I’m exploring the accounting treatment of content, that is if you treat it like an asset, how does or how would that change marketing’s P&L? Typically branded/native content is one off so treated as an expense. But if it’s re-used or has a longer timeframe of economic output does that mean it could be treated as an asset? Especially on the brands owned channels. Has anyone got first hand experience and/or analysis they’ve read? Would love to hear from readers. Continue reading

One big thing Subscription is not all that it seems for Tim Ferriss. The popular podcast host (400m+ downloads) last week announced a six month trial of no ads and shifting to a subscription model. Citing that the effort to filter and sign on advertisers was high and that it could be swapped to investing more in the content. A brief week later he changed tacts, his fans said they actually like the ads because… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 7/12

One big thing The concept of ‘creator-first’ strategies was mentioned in the new Twitter ArtHouse announcement. And it’s not the first time I’ve heard of this. Rather than focusing on the outlet, focus on the talent behind the content. With influencers, that is obvious and direct. For most other content brands create, it’s not. Is there a future where branded content creators are as in demand as hot TV directors? I’d say so. But not… Continue reading

One big thing Since last week there’s been a few more write-ups on Cannes (i.e. brand purpose hypocrisy at Cannes), not entirely sure what it was about this year which has struck a chord – but it has. This piece on the New York Times from Farhad Manjoo continues last week’s chat (that it’s all about the people you bump into), the global parties you’re not invited… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 6/21

One big thing Back in the hot seat, to a deluge of Cannes / no Cannes attendance chatter. What makes Cannes great is the concentration, bumping into people you know, everyone’s there to catch up, reconnect. Which is rare these days. But that’s what makes it so good. Unfortunately not for me this year but surely next. The other conference, if you haven’t been, is Dmexco. It is way more focused and compressed in a smaller location. But 45,000… Continue reading

Gustaf here, I head up marketing at Nudge. I’m covering for Ben this week, while he’s out enjoying the Spanish weather. ☀️ One big thing This week, we saw Salesforce’s surprise $15.7 billion acquisition of Tableau, just one week after Google announced that they’d bought Looker. I’m not suggesting that this deal happened as a direct result of Google’s acquisition of Looker (Salesforce has been eyeing up… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 6/7

One big thing I spent some time in LA this week, chatting with a cross-section of content creators. The consensus was that Netflix has been a net positive for the ecosystem. One takeaway was how everyone is on the hunt for the next great content idea/series. Where and how can they get an edge on the next cultural moment? The competition and hunt for that (and data) is more fierce than ever. It’s completely analogous to the competition for… Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 5/31

One big thing A by-product of consolidation, is the reduction in operations, both companies don’t need a finance team for example. But these teams are the lifeblood that keep organizations running, they hold the organizational memory and market knowledge. The counter, is the rise in technology at scale to power and enhance processes. Consolidation is an opportunity to rejuvenate and refocus on what truly is most impactful. As every other chat seems to be about the consolidation of the… Continue reading

Happy Friday! For readers in the US hopefully a quiet Friday ahead (if you’re not already out). One big thing Catching up with colleagues this week there were a few jokes about sketches, that is the crude drawings that form the backbone of bringing a concept to life. They may be crude but effective. Effective communication, this is a literal drawing of what I want. In a multimedia, digital world, the need for effective communication is ever more pressing. Continue reading

This Week in Native Ads 5/17

One big thing This week I got to guest edit Why is this interesting? A daily newsletter by Colin Nagy and Noah Brier. Using Amazon Prime Video as an example I dig in to, data-driven vs data assisted decision making. And how subjectivity plays a big role even though the data itself is objective. Check it out. I’ll be in LA in the coming weeks, if you want to come talk… Continue reading
